Hugh emigrated from Ireland to New York, where he built his life and family before moving to North Carolina in 2008. He was a man of quiet strength, a true gentleman who embodied hard work, determination, and a tender, loving heart. Hugh's deep religious faith and his desire to always see the best in others were the foundations upon which he lived his life. He was a hero to those who knew him, always offering kindness and support to family, friends, and even strangers. \n\nHugh was married to his loving wife, Mary (Cahill), for 54 years. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and family. Their partnership was one of unwavering devotion, with Mary by Hugh’s side through all of life’s joys and challenges. They shared countless memories, from raising their children to traveling together. He is survived by his children, Aidan and Laura (Anthony Pomes). Hugh cherished his role as a father, always guiding and supporting them with love, wisdom, and encouragement. His grandsons, Nicholas and Vincent, brought him immense joy and filled his heart with pride. Hugh (Poppy) loved spending time with them sharing his wisdom, and teaching them his gentle ways. His connection with his grandsons was a bond that will forever be treasured. He was also deeply loved by his numerous nieces and nephews, whose lives he touched with kindness and warmth. He is also survived by his siblings: John (NC), Brian (Wales), Colm (Ireland), Martin (England), Mary (Ireland), and Evelyn (NY), each of whom shared in the love and memories of their dear brother. Hugh’s bond with his siblings was strong, and the love they shared for one another transcended distance and time. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charlie, whose memory will forever be cherished by his surviving family.\n\nA proud nursing home administrator, Hugh dedicated much of his life to caring for others, using his knowledge and experience to improve the lives of countless patients and colleagues. His compassionate nature extended beyond his professional work, as he also volunteered with Transitions Hospice, where he made a lasting impact with his kindness, empathy, and unwavering support. Outside of his career and volunteer work, Hugh found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved jogging, tending to his garden, and feeding and watching the birds that visited his yard. These quiet moments brought him a sense of peace and fulfillment. Hugh also loved watching the Hurricanes hockey games, and his love for the game was something he enjoyed sharing with family and friends. Hugh’s sense of humor was always present, and he had a remarkable ability to bring lightness and laughter to every moment with family and friends, making them feel at ease and valued.\n\nThe family would like to extend special thanks to Alta and Brandi, the caregivers from Transitions, for their loving care and support during Hugh’s final days.\n\nA service to celebrate Hugh's life will be held at Mother Teresa Catholic Church (1125 Mother Teresa Dr, Cary, NC 27519) on February 28, 2025 at 11:00am. A love so expansive, that you feel it in the deep parts of your soul. A love that you have for Brett Aten Jr. Knowing Brett meant you were not his friend, you were more important than that to him, you were his family. The second born son of Teresa and Brett Aten, Brett Young Aten Jr was also the husband and soul mate of Amanda Aten (Peacock). Together for 25 years, they are the definition of unconditional, infinite love. Their love is eternally unbreakable, and though he is no longer here in the physical sense, their love will endure forever and could never diminish. Brett was a loving father to his only child, his pride and joy, his son that he had the honor of passing his namesake on to; Brett Young Aten III. Brett beamed with joy being the father to Brett III, and was always, and forever will be, so very proud of the amazing young man he had the privilege to help raise. Brett was also brother to Jay IV and Jonathan Aten, an uncle to Esmeralda, Jay V and Amelia, and a new grandpa to a gorgeous baby girl he never got to meet, Emalynn Verena Aten. Emalynn will know the amazing man her grandfather was through stories, photos and family; his memory and legacy will never fade, it is simply too strong to.\n\nBrett Young Aten Jr was the kindest, funniest, most generous and genuine man that existed. He passed unexpectedly on 2-19-25 and it has devastated everyone that knew him. He was only 40, so young, but so wise. If you ever needed anything, the shirt off his back would be yours. At the drop of a hat, he'd be there. He was generous even in death, being an organ donor; he was able to gift a second chance to several others in need. He loved to laugh, tell corny dad jokes, love on his family and friends, play and watch hockey and football, and he absolutely loved music and cars. He took great pride in his work and could fix and remodel anything. But he was also more than that; he was a shining light for everyone he met.\n\nIn lieu of flowers, the family has set up a Go Fund Me account to help with his final expenses and to support his widow Amanda and son Brett III through navigating his loss. If you can find it in your heart to donate to this cause, please know the Aten family (immediate and extended) will be forever grateful for your generosity. If you can't right now, please share this link to spread the word to help the Aten family keep his memory burning as bright as his smile was.\n\nhttps://gofund.me/468c3957 \n"}},"city":"Wendell","county":"Johnston","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"02/18/2025","age":40,"user_updated":true,"image":{"localFile":{"publicURL":"/static/dd83156d7a57b4be1468bef621fcc54f/Aten_f846e9a6b1.jpg"}}}},{"node":{"id":"986f35b6-aa19-5e41-8d24-669ab2ff7707","slug":"2025-02-18-Wilbert-Tan","name":"Wilbert J. Holley","content":{"data":{"content":"It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Claire Lorraine Holley, who passed peacefully at her home, February 17, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Claire fought a courageous and painful battle against cancer. \n\nClaire was born January 24, 1957, in Greenville SC, to Rufus Daley Haltiwanger, Jr. and Claire Lorraine Shealy Haltiwanger. She attended Dreher High School in Columbia, SC, in 1975. She went on to the College of Charleston, in Charleston, SC, where she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in both Political Science and Journalism in 1979. She was a Member of Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA) International Women’s Fraternity where she cultivated, nurtured, and maintained many lifelong friendships. She also studied Advertising and Public Relations at The University of South Carolina.\n\nClaire began working for the SC Optometric Association (SCOA; now the SCOPA SC Optometric Physician’s Association) in April 1992, as an assistant to the Executive Director, becoming the Executive Director in December 1993. Over the next 15 years she would guide SC Optometry through three major legislative battles, supervised 15 Hilton Head annual seminars, countless organizational meetings, seminars, and events.\n\nShe moved to Raleigh NC in the spring of 2008, to become the Executive Director of the NC Veterinary Medical Association (NCVMA). Claire was an outspoken advocate for veterinary medicine, as she was for optometrists in SC. She initiated many programs highlighting the advantages of and encouraging the public to seek veterinary care for their pets. Very public examples of this include her development of Veterinarians’ Day at the Capitol, the NCVMA Disaster Grants and the NCVMA Industry Council. She also developed the marketing campaign “Love Your Pet, See a Vet”, the College PR sports Marketing campaign placing animals in themed videos during college sports events throughout the state. \nHer passion, however, was legislative affairs for both the NCVMA and the SCOA. She fiercely protected both associations. It was Claire who led the efforts to help legislators understand that veterinarians truly are healthcare professionals that protect public health for both people and animals.\n\nClaire was preceded in death by her parents Rufus Daley Haltiwanger, Jr and Claire Shealy Haltiwanger. Claire is survived by her two brothers, Buck Haltiwanger, wife Rachel, their children Ryan, Tricia, Robert, and Natalie; and Sandy Haltiwanger, wife Bobbie, their children Amber, Preston, and Katie.\nAll who knew her will forever miss her infectious laughter and complete love of and zest for life. Claire impacted all of our lives personally in ways we cannot repay. She leaves with us a collage of memories and friendships that can never be taken away.\nPlease join Family and Friends in a Celebration of Life for Claire H. Holley at the NC State University Club 4200 Hillsborough St, Raleigh NC, 27606 on March 29, 2025, at 2 o’clock, arrival at 1:30-2:00PM.
