She was born on August 16, 1938, in Lackawana, Pennsylvania to Frederick (Ted) and Virginia (Ginie) Squires. As a young girl, she spent cherished days at the cottage her grandfather built on Lake Sheridan in Nicholson, PA. Following World War II, her family lived in Hinsdale, Illinois and Berea, Ohio, before settling in Northampton, Massachusetts, one of Gretchen’s favorite places, and the home of her parents for most of the rest of their lives.\n Gretchen attended Bucknell University and graduated from Mary Washington College. A dedicated teacher and tutor, she quietly transformed the lives of her students through steady encouragement, and genuine kindness. Her adult years were devoted primarily to raising her children in Hinsdale, IL, Wyckoff, NJ, and Cary, NC, but her heart was never far from New England, where she spent many summers and hosted large family gatherings at Lake Raponda in Wilmington, Vermont\n Gretchen’s deep and abiding faith was the foundation of her life. At West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood, NJ, First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, NC, and Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Cary, NC, where she was a charter member, Gretchen remained a steady and devoted presence, lifting others with kindness, wisdom, and service.\n Gretchen was a gifted artist with a particular love for watercolor, and her beautiful paintings, much like her elegant handwriting, reflected her thoughtfulness, care, and appreciation for beauty. She had a green thumb that brought life to every plant she touched, and a quiet generosity that nurtured friendships across generations and geographies. Gretchen loved anything funny and was known for her sudden, distinctive laugh; loud, joyful, and unmistakable. A lifelong passion for chocolate was one of her sweet trademarks. Family and friends will forever remember the rich chocolate cakes she baked, made with love and shared with delight.\n Gretchen was the heart of her family, modeling integrity, empathy, and humor. She was enormously proud of her children Todd (Kathy), Laurie (Tom), Jim (Landis), and Heather (Eddie), celebrating each of their triumphs and offering prayers and encouragement through every challenge. Her thirteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, who lovingly called her “Nona” as she called her own grandmother, were adored endlessly. She is also remembered with love by her sister Wendy, and joins in heaven her beloved parents and her cherished sister, Pam, with whom she shared a deep and lifelong bond. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Graham Best.\n\n While a private family celebration of Gretchen’s life will take place at a later date, Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Cary, NC will host a service to honor her memory on Saturday, November 1, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to:\nCornerstone Presbyterian Church 2200 High House Road, Cary NC 27519\nRaleigh Rescue Mission PO BOX 58634, Raleigh NC 27658\t\t give.raleighrescue.org\nWake County Public Library Trust Fund 4020 Carya Drive, Raleigh NC, 27610"}},"city":"Cary","county":"Wake","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"05/21/2025","age":87,"user_updated":true,"image":{"localFile":{"publicURL":"/static/06ecce33763973784ff1240273dfb3d7/object_Object_9308355595.jpeg"}}}},{"node":{"id":"469609b7-47ad-55e0-a5bb-899a66f3bd66","slug":"2025-05-21-Julius-Ciprian","name":"Julius Ciprian, Sr.","content":{"data":{"content":""}},"city":"Creedmoor","county":"Granville","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"05/21/2025","age":71,"user_updated":false,"image":null}},{"node":{"id":"626eaf2f-7106-5a40-8651-da4ce3dbbc17","slug":"article-674","name":"Ze-toto Desire Mungoto","content":{"data":{"content":"In loving Memory \n of \nZe-toto Desire MONGOTO\nMay 15, 1955 - May 21, 2025\nWe will never forget you.\nMay God keep you in His hands.\nPeace to your soul."}},"city":"Raleigh","county":"Wake","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"05/21/2025","age":70,"user_updated":true,"image":{"localFile":{"publicURL":"/static/c87e38c487ba3a09bd1d4be36fae9a88/object_Object_1cec0d9b0f.jpeg"}}}},{"node":{"id":"21236a12-fb66-5ba3-a260-09ac9489ab48","slug":"2025-05-21-Paul-Hughes","name":"Paul Michael Hughes ('Mike')","content":{"data":{"content":"Paul Michael Hughes\nJune 29, 1974 – May 21, 2025\n\nPaul Michael Hughes, 50, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on May 21, 2025.\n\nBorn on June 29, 1974, Paul, or 'Mike', was a son, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. She was the daughter of Giuseppe Turel and Maria Furlan, who also had 2 sons, Giuseppe and Aloyzi. In 1951, she married Staff Sergeant Frank M. Hendricks of the US Army. After World War II, American and British troops were stationed in the region for peace keeping. During his long Army career, Frank was stationed for many years at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico. He retired from the Army as a Master Sergeant. They built a family life in that city and the family was active at St. Peter's Church and School. Their only child, Louis Lee, attended the school and graduated from the high school. Frank Hendricks was buried in the city cemetery in 1979. With deep love and commitment, a headstone was inscribed with both names at that time. Slavizza will be taken there after the funeral service on May 31 to rest next to her beloved husband. The burial service will be officiated by St. Peter Church (which is managed by the Franciscan Friars). \nSlavizza was gifted by God with 2 grandchildren of her son; a daughter, Rae Lynn McClellan, and a son, Todd Booth Hendricks. She was very proud of her 7 wonderful great-grandchildren. Todd B and Leila M Hendricks of Smithfield, NC have 3 daughters; Cheyenne,Abigail and Isabella. They were joined in February, 2025 with the arrival of a son, Sawyer Lee. Slavizza looked forward to his birth very much and he was the last person that she hugged on this earth. Rae Lynn and Matthew T McClellan of Wilmington, NC have 3 children. They are blessed with twins; a boy, Gavin, and a daughter, Ava. The family was joined later by a son, Wyatt.\nSlavizza moved to Raleigh in 1996 to be with her son and grand-children. She doted all her love on the grandchildren during their school years and was active with their events. She continued her Franciscan fellowship by joining St. Francis of Assisi Church. She helped to start the over-50 club, but her joy was singing in the choir at the 11:45 mass. Health problems over the last few years kept her away at times, but she would quickly return. This year she was limited to attending the Easter mass and the one on her birthday. She always thanked God for giving her 101 momentous years. But on Sunday, May 18, just at the time that she would have been going into St. Francis church for the 11:45 mass, God called her with a SPECIAL INVITATION. \nThe funeral service and mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church on Saturday, May 31,2025 at 2:00pm. Church is located at 11401 Leesville Rd, Raleigh. Visitation is in the church gathering space from 1:30 to 2:00 only.\n(In lieu of flowers, you can send donations to Catholic Parish Outreach-catholiccharitiesraleigh.org-.
