Growing up in the Bronx, he developed a love of sports and spent much of his time playing stickball with neighborhood friends. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School, an all-boys school with over 10,000 students, where he played on the football team. As a teenager, Ed also worked at Yankee Stadium, selling concessions while getting to watch some of his favorite players. \n\nWith his love of sports and passion for teaching, Ed went on to attend Springfield College in Massachusetts, where he majored in Physical Education and graduated in 1967. He then earned a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from Indiana University in 1968, where he also played on the men’s volleyball team.\n\nAfter graduating from Indiana, Ed moved to Northern Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C., and began teaching Physical Education classes at Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC). It was there that Ed developed a deep love of racquet sports, especially tennis and racquetball. He taught at NVCC until 1977, when he opened Capitol Courts Club in Sterling, VA. During this time, Ed dedicated countless hours to racquetball, going on to win more than 40 national singles and doubles titles over the coming decades. He was inducted into the National Racquetball Hall of Fame in 1991 and served as a coach for the United States National Racquetball Team. \n\nCapital Courts was also where his son, Matt, first developed his love for racquet sports, often seen running around the club. It was also where Ed met his loving wife, Holly. They shared a love for racquetball and would go on to win tournaments together over the years. Ed and Holly later relocated to Apex, NC, just outside Raleigh, in the late 1990s. \n\nIn Apex, they raised their son Nick. Ed ran the racquetball program for the Cary YMCA for many years and, alongside Holly, coached youth basketball there as well. He continued to pursue his passion for racquet sports and teaching, beginning a 13-year career as a professor at N.C. State that lasted until 2019. While at State, Ed sponsored a successful racquetball club and developed a pickleball curriculum for the Department of Health and Exercise Studies. \n\nEd’s career as an educator and businessman spanned nearly six decades. His work ethic, dedication, and loyalty earned him the respect of his colleagues and friends and set a lasting example for his children. After retiring from teaching, he continued to support the Wolfpack, enjoyed playing pickleball, spent time with his family and friends, and attended his grandkids’ soccer games.\n\nEd was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Arthur. He leaves behind his wife of nearly 28 years, Holly; his two sons, Matt (Jennifer) Remen and Nick Remen; his grandchildren, Clayton and McKenna; his in-laws, John and Ginny; his brothers-in-law David (Helen) and Steve; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. \n\nSomewhere up above, Ed/Dad/Papa, is getting ready to play racquetball or pickleball, giving it everything he’s got. He will be missed more than he would ever know. \n\nA celebration of life will be held in his honor on Friday, June 27 from 2-5 p.m. in the ballroom of the Kildaire Farms Racquet and Swim Club in Cary, NC, where the family spent countless hours with friends and on the courts. This will be a casual event for friends and family to gather and reflect on the happiness and joy Ed brought to others. Tears and laughter are equally welcome. Feel free to wear your favorite Wolfpack shirt or pop of red to honor Ed’s love for teaching at NC State. \n\nIn lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation (www.parkinson.org)."}},"city":"Apex","county":"Wake","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"06/16/2025","age":79,"user_updated":true,"image":{"localFile":{"publicURL":"/static/c93357add66ed19c8035e35135aa7595/object_Object_116cca6612.jpeg"}}}},{"node":{"id":"0f8ff9ef-e3c1-5e1d-92bf-82b58c87d005","slug":"617-08-25-Craig-Gurgew","name":"Craig William Gurgew","content":{"data":{"content":""}},"city":"Atlantic Beach","county":"Carteret","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"06/16/2025","age":68,"user_updated":false,"image":null}},{"node":{"id":"79120d85-8384-5074-9ce5-68a2f6e57466","slug":"article-692","name":"Charles “Terry” Calloway","content":{"data":{"content":"Charles “Terry” Calloway, 76, of Willow Spring, NC passed away on June 16, 2025. Mashburn’s life as a one of the good guys came to an end leaving him missed by many. He was born in Canton, N.C. 96 years ago, grew up in nearby Asheville, lived most of his adult life in Hendersonville, N.C., and enjoyed his final two and a half years at Atria Oakridge Independent Living Raleigh still in love with Betty, his bride and companion of 74 years. \n\nNorm, born September 2, 1928, was a child during the Great Depression and World War II experiencing all the hard times and hard work that was considered just being middle class. He had many odd jobs mixed with lots of family togetherness including his sisters Jerry and Bobbie, brother C.A., and parents Clifton and Joan. They mixed with so many other families. When he wasn’t making things, repairing others, maintaining cars and bicycles, milking cows, cutting and hauling firewood he was hiking, camping, fishing, enjoying the mountain swimming holes, movies, and always active in church and the Boy Scouts. His and three other families established and built the first Starnes Cove Baptist Church between Asheville and Enka, N.C. He always enjoyed music, square dancing, clogging, and later ballroom dancing with Betty.\n\nHe worked at the American Enka plant for a year saving up money to attend his first two years of college at Mars Hill College. He was active in theatre there and lettered in track for high and low hurdles, the discus, and javelin. Norm then returned to Asheville and worked at the American Enka plant where his life soon took new direction in dating Betty Dickson and joining the Naval Reserve. After a ten-month courtship they were married and almost immediately the Navy called him into active duty. The newlyweds were whisked to Washington, D.C. where he served at the Defense Department and she worked as a civilian at the Pentagon for three years. They returned to Asheville and started their family with the birth of their son Bruce. By way of the G.I. Bill the three moved to Chapel Hill where Norm completed his B.S. degree in Business and was immediately hired by General Electric.\n\nNorm was a part of the first generation of computer specialists. He retired from the General Electric Outdoor Lighting Facility in Hendersonville, N.C. 1956-1991. Betty also retired from G.E. with 20 years service. In 1957 his daughter Debbie was born. Soon the couple designed and had the house built they would call home for over six decades. For over 67 years he and Betty’s lives there were jammed full of friendships, gardens, church, travel to 49 states, RV winters in Florida, untold trips to the beaches and Smokey Mountains, and a faith-based marriage and family. They worshipped at the First Baptist Church of Hendersonville where both were active in leading youth programs. He was president of the Lions Club twice and handled the affairs of an elderly blind man for fifteen years. He had a great time riding motorcycles with his children. Tennis was his lifelong sport. Until ten years ago, in their mid 80s, he and Betty were still tubing down the Davidson River in Brevard and even had their own tubes.\n\nNorm was a hard-working dedicated disciplined loving Christian husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and an all-around good guy.
