Smith.\n\nBorn in Philadelphia, PA, Phyllis was an accounting supervisor at Liberty Mutual before becoming a stay-at-home mom for her three children. She was very involved in their lives, including serving as a leader in their Girl Scout troops and as a member of their PTA. Her children have fond memories of falling asleep listening to her playing the organ, and loved helping her make her legendary sand tarts and snickerdoodles at Christmas time.\n\nShe was an active member of the New Hackensack Reformed Church, among many other things singing in the choir and serving as church secretary. She was also a member of the YWCA and the Women’s Guild, served as treasurer of the Home Demonstration Club, and was an avid bowler who accumulated quite a collection of trophies. While living at Waltonwood she made lots of friends with staff and other residents and she always managed to put a smile on their faces. \n\nHer ashes will be scattered together with her husband’s in the Pocono Mountains in memory of the family’s many summer vacations camping at Promised Land Lake.\n\nShe is survived by her children, Debbie Mickunas and husband Mark, Susie Smith and wife Sarah, Jim Smith and wife Peggy; seven grandchildren, Anthony, Jamey, Rob, Mary, Katie, Jon-Paul, and Gloria; five great-grandchildren, Aeva, Brennon, Nathaniel, Mark, and Ezra; and sister-in-law Donna Korkes and former son-in-law Richard Pecorella.\n\nA small, private memorial service will be held for family and close friends to honor her memory.\n\nThe family would like to thank the staff of Transitions LifeCare Hospice; in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Transitions LifeCare (transitionslifecare.org/donate) or your local Hospice."}},"city":"Cary","county":"Wake","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"05/08/2023","age":94,"user_updated":true,"image":{"localFile":{"publicURL":"/static/65392172fe856bb7ceebfeefc9928734/object_Object_59454e0485.jpeg"}}}},{"node":{"id":"fe27929b-7cd2-518f-85a1-bf9bda2f8057","slug":"2023-05-08-Chrissie-Marley","name":"Chrissie Marley","content":{"data":{"content":""}},"city":"Fuquay Varina","county":"Wake","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"05/08/2023","age":45,"user_updated":false,"image":null}},{"node":{"id":"bea9abce-3ad1-5caa-9a6e-2afa0cb655b2","slug":"article-75","name":"Sophia Samusevich Ceppos","content":{"data":{"content":"Sophia Samusevich Ceppos, 100, of Raleigh, NC passed away May 8th, 2023 at Hillcrest Raleigh Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center.\n \nSophia was born April 1, 1923 in Joliet, IL to the late Fyodor (Peter) and Paraska (Pearl) Samusevich. Surviving are her son Larry A. Ceppos and wife Patti, of Seven Lakes; son Sanford P. Ceppos and partner Courtney Ward, of Raleigh; grandchildren, Laura Ceppos, Karin Ceppos, Rachel Scallan, Jaimie Francis, Daniel Ceppos, Matt Jones and Sara Ceppos; and twelve great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Sophia was preceded in death by her ex-husband Melvin Ceppos and her siblings, Ruby Jackson, Pete Samusevich, and Alex Samusevich.\n \nSophia’s father died when she was very young, and she and her 3 older siblings helped her mother run a small grocery store. As a young woman, she bravely left all she knew behind to move to Washington DC and marry a man she barely knew. She became a wife and a mother, co-entrepreneur, and homemaker. She made so many friends and fully embraced her life choices. Then she again took the road less traveled and loved herself enough to leave a marriage that no longer honored her. In her 40’s she became a “career woman”, combining a love of golf and payroll and even uprooted her life to work for PGA in FL until a gator greeted her at her front door one day - and back to MD she went. She was a championship golfer and tennis player, and a fierce competitor in any game. She became a grandmother and who could have done it better? She carved out time for 1:1 weekends with each grandchild. She made food that will never be rivaled. She gave her grandchildren exposure to culture in the arts via the museums, parks, and theaters in the DC area. At 80 years old, after losing so many of her friends and feeling ready for something new, she moved to NC. She learned to navigate a new city, make new (younger) friends, and mastered using the internet. She became a great grandmother of 12! She finally gave up living on her own and driving at 93 and begrudgingly let others care for her since. At 100, with end stage dementia, she still had humor and kindness in abundance. For all those who knew Sophia, they would surely agree that these words describe her: love, courage, kindness, independence, forgiveness, food, and laughter. She lived a very full life in her 100 years, touching so many lives.\n \nA private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association in Sophia’s memory.\n \nHow should we remember Sophia? By enjoying “a little something sweet” and hugging your loved ones tight. \n\nYou can view some pictures of Sophia over the years here - https://photos.app.goo.gl/7EB6MdErDuayQH1x6"}},"city":"Raleigh","county":"Wake","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"05/08/2023","age":100,"user_updated":true,"image":{"localFile":{"publicURL":"/static/510c59e2918139be5ab7ac297edc70d9/object_Object_c30a6b7863.jpeg"}}}},{"node":{"id":"3ca1afe7-860b-53f4-9237-5261e4b54047","slug":"article-90","name":"Carolyn Ann Magdarz and Edward Frank Magdarz","content":{"data":{"content":"Carolyn Ann Magdarz, 87, of Wake Forest, entered God’s kingdom on\nMay 7, 2023.
