Maggie was born in Fairfax County, VA, on February 6, 1934, to Jesse and Vessie Baker.  She graduated from Bramwell High School, Bramwell, WV, in 1952. She went on to marry Bobby Lee Farris and spent 22 years as a military wife.  Maggie called Goldsboro, North Carolina, home for 50 years.\nMaggie was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, her sister, Naomi Sullivan, and her parents.  After the death of Bobby, she went into business as a traveling nanny and baby nurse.  For 20 years, Maggie zigzagged the United States keeping children and tending newborns.\nMaggie is survived by her three children—Bobby Lee Farris, Jr., Michele Farris Wood and husband James Wood, and Laura Ann Binkley and husband Kyle Binkley; five grandchildren—Melissa Braswell, Michael Wood, William Radford, Mark Wood, and James Wood; and ten great-grandchildren.  Maggie also has three living siblings—Andrew Baker and wife Barbara Jean Baker, David Baker, and Audrey Wantling and husband Steve Wantling—as well as many nieces and nephews.\nA Celebration of Life service will be held for Maggie on Friday, June 9, 2023, at Grace Baptist Church located at 3305 Old Milburnie Road, Raleigh, NC.  Flowers can be received at the church from 8 - 9:30 AM on the morning of June 9. Mary was born in Wilmington, DE on August 9, 1966. She attended Mount Pleasant High School  (Wilmington, DE) and the Culinary Institute of America (CIA, NY). Chef Mary worked in restaurants in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maine and North Carolina. Mary was the opening chef for Guglhupf Cafe in Durham, NC. She opened her own restaurant: One Whirled Cafe in Wake Forest, NC in 2014. She went on to work as a chef at other local restaurants. Mary had a a fierce need to create great food without compromise. Mary’s “truck farm” of fresh vegetables and flowers was legendary. She loved her neighborhood, developing wonderful friendships. Her love of hiking brought out her sense of wonder and whimsy. If you are able; stand on a beach near you and fly a kite in her memory. When she wanted solace, kite flying was her release. Mary is predeceased by her parents, Michael and Catherine Melie, as well as, siblings: James Melie, Carol Seabrook and Patrick Melie. She was survived by her siblings: Michael/Margaret Melie, Deborah/Gregory Griffin, Margaret/Lloyd Truluck and Barbara/Sam Besmar. She leaves behind a large loving family of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Mary’s dear friends are also, deeply affected by her death.\n\nInterment will be private. Future celebrations of Mary’s life will occur in the both NC and DE. She was born on April 7, 1939 in Monroe, Louisiana and grew up in West Monroe and graduated from West Monroe High School.  Earning degrees from ULM in Liberal Arts and from Louisiana Tech in General Studies with graduate classes in Criminology. \n\nNell's life was that of versatility:  embracing life in challenging jobs and with all levels of social engagements. At different points she wanted to be a doctor, an artist, a business owner and a preacher. Her dedication to Jesus Christ led to her ordination with Iverna Tompkins Ministry and working with Woman of the Word.  With her friend, Janette Daigle, Nell spoke at church groups and prayer meetings, offering support and guidance to those in search of Christ.  Further broadening her life experiences, she worked for Dr. Najeeb Klam as a lab technician and histologist. In 1969, Nell married Joe Young, a Monroe native. Throughout her life, she was inspired and active in the art world.  She was a dedicated and successfully recognized artist in Louisiana and beyond her home state.  Her pen and ink of the Benson Livery Stable is displayed in West Monroe City Hall. She also  illustrated the book “Cook With Marie Louise”.  As a court room artist, she was active in East Texas and Louisiana. For a few years she was a case worker at City of Faith. She really wanted to help people get back on their feet, find work and live again. Between courtroom artist and case worker, she ran a janitorial service called Grimestoppers. She won bids and worked long hours cleaning banks and insurance offices at night. Her experience helped her later at FMS doing similar work. Nell's sensitive personality as well as her energy and sincerity was uplifting. Her laughter filled a room.  Nell did not leave an empty space.  She loaded her life with adventure, joy, caring and sharing. It remains an example for us all. Tugwell","content":{"data":{"content":"Helen Sturgeon Tugwell, 96, died June 3, 2023 at UNC Rex Hospital, following a brief illness. She was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on January 24, 1927, to George and Lucy Sturgeon. She attended school in both Kentucky and North Carolina, followed by East Carolina Teachers College and the University of Louisville. She lived in Farmville, NC, for 35 years before moving to Raleigh in 1987.\nWhen she moved to Raleigh, she became active in the newcomer’s club, joined a dinner club and joined Greystone Baptist Church. She served as a host mother to a NCSU PhD student from Taiwan. Helen loved to travel and visited many places both domestically and internationally, even into her eighties. Highlights of her travels included trips to Hawaii and the Western US, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, and many other countries. She participated in Raleigh Friendship Force trips to France and Belgium and hosted visitors from many countries.\nShe is survived by three daughters, Cheryl Tugwell of Iowa City, Iowa, Marla Tugwell Adams (Joel) of Asheville, NC, and Jan Tugwell of Raleigh, one grandchild, Ian Nilausen (EJ) of Illinois, three step grandchildren Akim Nilausen (Valerie) of Wisconsin, Sam Adams of Pennsylvania and Sadie Walters (Adam) of Raleigh, 1 great grandchild and 6 step great grandchildren. She is also survived by 6 nephews and 5 nieces. In addition she is survived by dedicated friends Eurice Mendoza and family, Stephanie Dodd, and Mike Buckel.\nShe was preceded in death by her parents, Lucy and George Sturgeon, infant sister Joneva Ruth Sturgeon, and brothers Leon Sturgeon and Eldon Sturgeon, sister-in-law Jo Anne Sturgeon, and son-in-law Erik Nilausen.\nA memorial service will be held at Greystone Baptist Church at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, June 6. The family will receive friends in the Gathering Room at the church beginning at 5:00 pm. At Helen’s request, her body was donated to Duke University School of Medicine Anatomical Gifts Program. As an alternate to flowers, donations may be made to Greystone Baptist Church, 7509 Leadmine Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615 or the charity of your choice. Eric was born in Troy, NY, on October 6, 1957, to Shirley and Dale Beach and grew up in Latham, NY. He graduated from Shaker High School and received an Associate in Applied Science in Mechanical Technology from Hudson Valley Community College. He furthered his education by obtaining a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Mechanical Engineering at RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology).\n\nEric began his career when he moved to Endicott, NY, at IBM in 1980, where he worked until 1995. As a Mechanical Engineer at IBM, his major project was providing manufacturing support for the IBM 3890 Bank Check Sorter. He then furthered his professional career when he started working at Lockheed Martin in 1995. As a Mechanical Engineer at Lockheed Martin, his major projects included design/development engineering for multiple mail sorters/feeders, including ST-3000 &amp; PTI-45, and numerous government contracts, including Marine One helicopter and Tactical Wheeled Vehicles.\n\nEven though he was proud of his career, Eric always said he found more joy outside the work office. While working, he found time to own and fix up apartments in Maine, NY. He also built a beautiful home with two of his close friends in Owego, NY. During his retirement, he moved to North Carolina with his family to enjoy the warm weather. He was the most intelligent man who cared deeply for his family. He loved sharing his knowledge with anyone he came across and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Eric was the ultimate handyman and could fix anything, no matter what it was. He enjoyed finding projects around his house and took pride in keeping a well-maintained home.\nEric was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed cross-country skiing, kayaking down countless rivers, exploring new walking trails, and enjoying bonfires with his kids. He loved cruising on his 1985 Yamaha motorcycle, taking countless trips and leisurely rides on backroads. He was an avid boater who enjoyed boating on Cayuga Lake in Ithaca, NY on his Bayliner motorboat; where he created unforgettable memories with his family.\n\nEric is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Beach of 31 years; his son Brad Beach and his daughter Erica Beach; stepmother Joan Beach; his sister-in-law Sandra Rhoades; niece and nephew, Amelia Beach and Jon Beach.
