Smith","content":{"data":{"content":"Theresa Lynn Spalding Smith, 65, of Sanford, passed away on October 1, 2023 at Duke Hospital.\nTheresa was born in Decatur, Illinois on December 11, 1957 to Bonnie Jean and Walter Lemar Spalding. She was the oldest of their four children.\nTheresa was raised in Decatur, Illinois. After graduating from Douglas MacArthur High in Decatur in 1976, she attended Olivet Nazarene University in Kankakee, Illinois and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology in 1980.\nTheresa met her husband, Ken in 1983. They were married in St. Petersburg, Florida on May 10, 1986. They had two children, a son, Aaron and a daughter, Ariane. Theresa worked in the counseling field for many years and obtained a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Nova University (Florida) in 1990. Following the birth of Aaron in 1990, Theresa became a homemaker and home school parent for her children for the next 23 years. The family lived in St. Petersburg until 2001, when they moved to Sanford.\nTheresa volunteered for the Christians United Outreach and Highway to Healing in Sanford. She re-entered the workforce before retiring in 2018.\nTheresa possessed a servant’s heart for others. She always looked for opportunities to get to know and to serve others. Her kind spirit was fueled by her strong Christian faith, as her love of God was the most important characteristic of her life.\nTheresa is survived by her husband, Ken of Sanford; her children, Aaron (Shpresa) and Ariane; a granddaughter, Liana Smith; her three siblings, Walter of Columbus, Mississippi, Roger (Cheryl) of Springfield, Missouri and Karen (Eric) of Decatur, Illinois; a niece, Heather Burkett of Decatur, Illinois; two nephews, Matthew Spalding of Springfield, Missouri and Alex (Agnes) of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania and two uncles, Kenny McKinney of Springfield, Missouri and Harold (Sandy) of Lexington, North Carolina. She was predeceased by her father, Walter Spalding, her mother, Bonnie Jordan and her step-father, James Jordan.\nA celebration of life service for Theresa will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 13th at Hunt Springs Baptist Church, 1557 Saint Andrews Church Rd. in Sanford, with the Rev. Dr. Wesley Thomas presiding. She was born on October 7, 1947, the daughter of Richard Allen Sprigg and Norma Jean (Coen) Sprigg in Anderson County, Kansas. Her father operated a small construction company, so she grew up in several eastern Kansas communities in a mobile home. The family settled in Paola where she developed a love of horses and dogs. In High School she was elected to the National Honor Society.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in English and Journalism at Baker University, Baldwin City, Ks, and while there met her future husband, Ronald Madl. Upon her graduation in 1969, she and Ron married and moved to St Louis, Mo, when Ron was hired as a research scientist at Ralston Purina. She enjoyed books and writing. \n\nDuring their twenty years in St Louis, she served as editor for the American Soybean Association which was headquartered there. Then she performed a similar role for the Consulting Engineers Council of Missouri, and was Marketing Coordinator for Woodward-Clyde Consultants, an environmental engineering firm. She also served as president of the St Louis Writers Guild.\n\nIn 1997, when Ron was hired at Kansas State University, they moved back to Manhattan, Ks. She continued to apply her writing skills as a grant writer for the Department of the Army at nearby Ft Riley. Later she served as technical writer for the K-State faculty member who was part of the International Panel for Climate Change research team when they and Al Gore were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. She served as founding member and president of the Kansas Writers, Inc., and was president of the K-State Social Club. She loved to visit old historic houses on her travels and served as a docent at the historic Wolf House Museum in Manhattan.\n\nShe authored several novels and short stories and published fourteen books plus several e-books. During her years in Manhattan, she served on the Municipal Library Board. She was one of the founding members of the Coffeeshop Writers, a group of Manhattan, Kansas authors of a wide variety of fiction who began gathering at a local coffee shop, and subsequently maintained their friendship and writing support for over twenty years through email and video visits even after most of them moved to other states. This group collaborated on anthologies, the most notable was Trespassing Time – Ghost Stories from the Prairie and it was she who named the book.\nDuring retirement in Florida for a few years she served as writer/editor for the community newspaper.  When she moved to North Carolina in 2017, she continued as a writer/editor for her community news magazine and wrote book reviews for the community.\n\nIn 2015 she was diagnosed with an incurable lung disease (IPF). She received a lung transplant at Duke Medical Center in September 2017, and survived with the new lung for 6 years.\n\nShe was proceeded in death by her mother, father, and sister, Lisa. She is survived by her husband Ron, of Cary, NC, daughter, Lori and her husband, Francisco J. Born October 23, 1922 in Franklinville she was the daughter of Peter Martin and Mary Cappelletti Maffei. On May 26, 1945 she married Anthony A Amitrano who predeceased her April 11, 2012.\n\tShe was a graduate of Ten Broeck Academy and a resident of Franklinville for 96 years. She was a parishioner of Saint Philomena Catholic Church and was active in its Altar Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Franklinville American Legion Auxiliary, a life member of the Ischua Valley Historical Society, and an Echo Meals-On-Wheels volunteer for over 15 years. She was active in Cub and Boy Scouts serving as a Den Mother. She was employed at Bartholomew’s Pharmacy for 30 years.\n\tShe is survived by her two sons – Anthony (Patricia) A. Amitrano Jr. of Chapel Hill, NC; Robert (Pamela Hage) P. Amitrano of Lyndonville, NY; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by a sister Rita M. Lickfeld.\n\tA funeral mass will be celebrated at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill, NC, on Friday, November 3rd at 10:30 a.m. with the Very Reverend Scott McCue, Pastor, presiding.\n\tA gathering with the family will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, November 11, 2023, in St. Philomena's Roman Catholic Church, 26 Plymouth Ave., Franklinville NY. A memorial Mass will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dennis Mancuso, Pastor, as celebrant. From a young age, she embraced her role as a big sister, caring for her younger siblings with devotion. She would pick them up from school every day and often treated them to special outings, such as trips to the movies, creating cherished memories during their childhood.\n\nShe and her future husband, Wei Chen, grew up in the same hometown, their lives intertwined from an early age. They embarked on a lifelong journey of love and companionship, marrying on February 7, 1990, in their hometown.\n\nMi pursued her education with unwavering dedication, earning her undergraduate degree in Biology from Jiangxi University in 1987 and her first graduate degree in 1989. Mi and Wei made the life-changing decision to immigrate to the United States in 1994, where Mi continued her pursuit of knowledge and earned another graduate degree from the Medical College of Ohio in 1997. After settling in North Carolina, Mi embarked on a remarkable career at GlaxoSmithKline as a drug discovery researcher, dedicating over two decades of her life to finding treatments and cures for infectious diseases.\n\nBeyond her professional accomplishments, Mi was a loving and devoted mother to her two children, Sherry and Jack. She cherished her role as a parent and instilled in her children the value of hard work and education. Mi's love and support for her family knew no bounds, and she took immense pride in their every achievement.\n\nMi enjoyed simple pleasures such as cooking, gardening, taking on home improvement projects, indulging in binge-worthy television shows, and gaining financial wisdom through investment podcasts. Her evenings were often filled with leisurely walks around the neighborhood after dinner, where she found solace and peace in the world around her.\n\nMi is survived by her husband, Wei Chen; children, Sherry and Jack Chen; parents, Shijian Xie and Rongfen Liu; siblings, Chunming and Hui Xie.\n\nMi will be remembered as a beloved member of the community and her legacy of love, strength, and resilience will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. May she find eternal peace, and may her memory continue to inspire us all.\n\nA service to celebrate Mi’s life will be held at Maplewood Cemetery, Section 2, 1621 Duke University Rd, Durham, NC at 10 am on Sunday, October 8, with a reception to follow.
