Wichmann, 79, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and formerly of Battle Creek, Michigan, died on Dec 7, 2023, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief battle with lymphoma. Gerry was born to Werner and Alice Wichmann in Chicago, Illinois on September 19, 1944. He was the 2nd of 4 brothers, whom he loved very much. \n\nGerry studied architecture at Ferris State in Michigan and had a 35-year career in the field. He married and had two children, Stephen and Suzanne. He was later remarried to Barbara, through whom he gained two daughters, Laura and Kay. Together, Gerry and Barbara had their son, Andrew. \n\nGerry was a faithful Christian and a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. He was a long-time member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Raleigh. In 2016, Gerry and Barb fulfilled their dream of building a cabin in the North Carolina mountains and there they joined Mountainside Lutheran Church in Linville. Gerry devotedly served the church in various roles, including greeter, usher, choir singer, member of numerous leadership committees and volunteer efforts, and church elder. Gerry also enjoyed the social life of the church. He was a mainstay of church softball leagues, holiday celebrations, picnics and dinners, and other church fellowship activities.\n\nGerry could create, build, or fix anything. He designed the last two houses he lived in and spent many Saturdays with his tools building furniture and attending to whatever needed to be maintained. Gerry also loved all things sports, especially the Chicago Bears, Bulls, and White Sox…southside to the end! He played Euchre, kickball, driveway basketball, tennis, the Hulk, and steamroller with his kids and grandkids, and coached their teams. He taught his children the love of Jesus, to do the best they could with what they had, and if you were going to do something, do it right and do it well. Gerry left this earth way too early and will be dearly missed every day.\n\nGerry was preceded in death by his parents, Werner and Alice. He is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, Barbara Wichmann, their dog Maggie, and his five children, Stephen (Kristi) Wichmann, Laura (Jeff) Burton, Suzanne (Rick) Wilson, Kay (Levi) Hazen, and Andrew (Cecilia) Wichmann, and grandchildren Trent Burton, Claire Bryant, Emery Burton, Maya Wilson, Eliana Wilson, Rebecca Edwards, Levi Hazen Jr, and Kayle Hazen. He is also survived by his brothers Al (Jennifer) Wichmann, Jim (Doris) Wichmann, and John (Diane) Wichmann and their families. In addition, he is survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.\n\nGerry’s family will hold a memorial service on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, 3525 Rogers Road, Wake Forest, North Carolina. An additional memorial service with interment will be held at Mountainside Lutheran Church in Linville, North Carolina, at a later date."}},"city":"Raleigh","county":"Wake","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"12/07/2023","age":79,"user_updated":true,"image":{"localFile":{"publicURL":"/static/63d1fb5786e435329f0cf36ff2c66d88/object_Object_ffce451037.jpeg"}}}},{"node":{"id":"f2c761de-305c-5bb8-9847-7fed162e7313","slug":"2023-12-07-Elaine-Zisek","name":"Elaine Joan Zisek","content":{"data":{"content":"Elaine Joan Zisek, age 84, died peacefully in North Carolina among family and friends on December 07, 2023.\n\nElaine is survived by her son Jim Zisek, her daughter in-law Katherine, as well as her four grandchildren, Emma Blair (Zisek), Ethan, Sarah, and John. Barbara was raised in Roanoke Rapids, NC by her grandmother for the first ten years of her life and then moved to Richmond, VA to live with her mother. She married young and quickly had four children whom she loved fiercely but struggled to financially support. When her marriage ended shortly after the birth of her fourth child, and with only a small amount of monthly child support, she got a job as a secretary at the MCV School of Dentistry and did the best she could working fulltime to raise her family. Over the years Barbara endured the unimaginable helplessness of losing her second born daughter to domestic violence and the agonizing stress of having her firstborn struggle with substance abuse. \n\nWhile Barbara's professional career was spent as secretary to the head of the dental school, most of her personal life was spent being a full time caregiver for the people who needed her most. In her middle age she stepped up to finish raising three of her grandchildren. She attended her share of choral performances and baseball games while also keeping pace with the ever expanding challenges of raising a family and navigating public education. \n\nShe retired early to move back to NC when her last grandchild was born to her youngest daughter. It was in Raleigh where she found rest and tranquility with a tight circle of friends and family and from within a safe community.\n\nBarbara loved to cook, had a wide ranging taste in music, enjoyed thrifting and a good cup of coffee. She conversed heart-to-heart, so if you were avoiding your truth, she was not the person to ask. She held people to standards, empowering them to see the merciful differences between right and wrong. She was loyal, and quick to send a greeting card when you needed it most, and entertained her friends with a quick, sardonic wit. \n\nIt was the last few years that she lived her best life. \nShe built a whole new life in Raleigh being the best grandmother and mother anyone could ask for. While the first half of her life was a struggle, her time in Raleigh was filled with the joy of her last grandchild and the apple of her eye. \n\nShe was preceded in death by two daughters, Robin Amadeo and Lannie Schultz and survived by two children, Joseph Brunner and Tammy Brunner. She had four cherished grandchildren, Joshua Schultz, Demi Schultz, Joseph Amadeo and Benjamin Lane and two great grandchildren Jackson and Chayce Schultz.\n\nHer absence will be felt by many."}},"city":"Raleigh","county":"Wake","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"12/04/2023","age":78,"user_updated":true,"image":{"localFile":{"publicURL":"/static/c2a007278e68238a19d56f0c37bf3d6d/object_Object_6babf9bbf3.jpeg"}}}},{"node":{"id":"d647310a-453a-58dd-b511-fac64d143600","slug":"2023-12-03-Howard-Siever","name":"Howard Siever","content":{"data":{"content":""}},"city":"Zebulon","county":"Wake","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"12/03/2023","age":87,"user_updated":false,"image":null}},{"node":{"id":"e9614b75-b2d7-52e8-9594-40b6d751be02","slug":"article-288","name":"William Setliff","content":{"data":{"content":""}},"city":"Fuquay-Varina","county":"Harnett","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"12/03/2023","age":76,"user_updated":false,"image":null}},{"node":{"id":"afbdd50b-7450-563a-a5e7-0cf2acd76cc6","slug":"2023-12-02-Timmy-Owens","name":"Timmy Owens","content":{"data":{"content":""}},"city":"Pinetops","county":"Edgecombe","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"12/02/2023","age":53,"user_updated":false,"image":null}}]}},"pageContext":{"limit":12,"skip":1992,"numPages":317,"currentPage":167,"numObits":3797,"featured":false}},
