She is survived by her devoted daughter, Michelle Manning (Wilmington); her beloved brother Mackie (Florida) and her other two siblings; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; her ex-son-in-law, Kris Petersen (Wilmington); and her adorable Lhasa Apso, Herself.\n\nShe graduated New Hanover High School in 1958, where she was an excellent student, editor of the newspaper, and a member of the chorus. \n\nAs a single mother, Shirley completed her teaching degree at Wilmington College, where she was an editor of The Seahawk, and went on to complete graduate studies at the University of North Carolina. She taught English in Sanford; Charlotte Amalie High School in St. Thomas, USVI; and Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines, NC. In addition to being a reporter for The Sanford Herald and a feature writer for The Pilot, Shirley turned her drive and ambition to building and development, becoming the first licensed female contractor in North Carolina, building and rehabbing homes in Sanford, Southern Pines, and Wilmington. Shirley briefly lived in Ireland where she bred and raised Connemara ponies. She also taught English in China on and off for more than a decade. \n\nAfter surviving life-threatening breast cancer at the age of 51, Shirley took up painting as art therapy at the behest of her daughter. Too weak to paint standing, she painted with a canvas on her lap, a habit she never changed. After her first three paintings were juried into a show in Raleigh, she went on to paint prolifically and exhibited in St. Thomas, Wilmington, Chapel Hill, and China.\n\nAfter “retiring,” she lived in Orlando, Florida, for almost 20 years, where she enjoyed ballroom dancing and being an active Elks and Moose club member. \n\nShe left Florida in 2016 and returned to Wilmington to live with her daughter for the last six years of her life. A lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church since the age of 12, Shirley embraced her church family and the opportunity to ‘dress to the nines’ every Sunday complete with a matching hat. At various points, she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school, and she remained an active member of her cherished prayer group, with her last entry into her prayer and daily devotional journal dated December 30, the day before she entered the hospital. \n\nShirley’s loving spirit, intelligence, courage, humor, and generosity will forever be remembered and treasured, especially by her daughter, Michelle, who is thankful every day for the time spent together during their final six years, which were filled with laughter, love and adventures. \n\nA funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, February 2 at Calvary Baptist Church, 423 N 23rd St., Wilmington, NC 28405. The family will receive guests at 10 Conch Lane, Wrightsville Beach, following the service from 3:30-5:30.\n\nIn lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Calvary Christian School Scholarship Fund or to a charity of your choice."}},"city":"Wilmington","county":"New Hanover","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"01/04/2024","age":84,"user_updated":true,"image":{"localFile":{"publicURL":"/static/583b0deafcc9dfc9a3aa75cccf770920/object_Object_cacb35896d.jpeg"}}}},{"node":{"id":"0e5a575a-deef-5599-af18-fea41d2ceb9c","slug":"2024-01-04-Michelle-Tycast","name":"Michelle Tycast","content":{"data":{"content":""}},"city":"Raleigh","county":"Wake","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"01/04/2024","age":62,"user_updated":false,"image":null}},{"node":{"id":"6a3e409c-08f4-5a92-9e98-5d624b796fda","slug":"article-301","name":"Howell John Hatcher, Jr.","content":{"data":{"content":"Howell John Hatcher, Jr., 92, of Cary, a retired real estate Broker, banking executive, community leader and, most of all, a family man, died Wednesday, Jan. 3 at Transitions LifeCare after a brief illness.\n\nA native of Morganton, N.C., John was the older son of Judge and Mrs. H.J. “Doggie” Hatcher. Born in Riga, Latvia on April 11, 1928, she grew up surrounded by a large and loving family of many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She attended school, studied piano, enjoyed gymnastics, tennis, and volleyball, and spoke several languages. At 15 years old, during WWII, her family was displaced and lived under communist and Nazi rule for several years. She slept in haystacks, barns, and at times out in the open while they traveled by oxcart through desolate landscapes and demolished cities, eventually living in refugee camps in Germany until 1949. Along with her parents, she emigrated to the United States by ship from war-torn Europe. Sponsored by the Lutheran Church, on her second day in America, Astra was sent to Racine, Wisconsin to live and work with a doctor and his family as a cook where she learned to prepare American dishes still enjoyed by her family on special occasions. After some time, Astra moved back to Boston with her parents where she attended Boston University, studying chemistry. She also found work at Jordan Marsh, Boston Lying-In Hospital, and as a bank teller, eventually meeting her future husband and love of her life, Paul B. Covell, at flight attendant school. In 1956, Paul and Astra married, ultimately enjoying fifty-three loving years together. With Paul’s work in the hotel and restaurant management business, they traveled and lived in New York and Pennsylvania but came back to Boston in 1968. With their growing family of three children, in 1969 they moved to Marblehead, MA, where Astra became part of the fabric of the community through her work at Brown’s Bakery, Fruit of the Four Seasons, and as an owner of BIX Furniture Stripping and Refinishing. \n\nAstra loved nothing more than her family, but also enjoyed gardening, throwing legendary dinner parties for friends, and being a Little League mother at Gatchell’s Pit, watching her two sons play baseball and football from the bleachers. Alongside her daughter, she enjoyed shopping and attending musicals and plays. Accompanied by her mother, daughter, and later, granddaughter, she regularly attended social events at Latvian churches in the Boston area, a community she was a part of for decades. She spent hours watching her beloved QVC, spoiling those she loved, and occasionally herself as well. When not shopping on the television, she sought out coverage of the royal family, spent time rooting for all of Boston’s sports teams, and watched every tennis match possible. A notorious card shark, she spent many a Saturday night with her husband, longtime friends, and granddaughter, winning hand after hand, raking in fistfuls of pennies. When her daughter returned to work after having children, she selflessly spent the days with her grandchildren, passing down family traditions and instilling a lifelong love of learning. When they went on to school, she shared those gifts as a caregiver for the children of other local families.\nAstra was a patron of Latvian charities as well as St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital and proudly supported veterans' causes. She was a voracious reader her entire life, enjoying multiple topics and genres. With her husband, she loved to travel and enjoyed bus tours and cruises. In 1983, Astra took her mother, then 85 years old, back to Latvia for a visit, where she realized that America had truly become her home. In 2004, Astra and Paul sold the family home and purchased a condo on Lake Winnisquam in New Hampshire, where they enjoyed seven of the happiest years of their time together. After her husband’s passing, Astra moved to North Carolina to live out her remaining years with her daughter, son-in-law, and son.\n\nAstra leaves behind her daughter Cindy and husband Robert Maher; son, Richard Covell all of Knightdale, NC; son, David Covell of New Orleans, LA; granddaughter, Jennifer and husband Christopher Reynolds, great-granddaughters Nola and Cortana of Revere, MA; grandson, Robert “Bo” Maher and wife Rachel, great-granddaughter Ava, and step great-grandson Vincent Gaussoin, all of Zebulon, NC.\n\nA private graveside service and burial will take place in late spring/early summer in Boston.
