Ok, and maybe an occasional PayDay candy bar or two. He had a passion for aviation, he loved being working around airplanes. He loved that his job allowed his family to travel the world together. He also loved being near the water, whether in a boat or swimming in a creek or river. Water invigorated him!\nBig Rick will be remembered for his fishing adventures with his grandsons, spending time on the lake, his beautiful vegetable gardens, his shenanigans and good sense of humor.\nHe was good at reading people and seeing things from their shoes. He had passion for golf and boating, a passion that he shared with everyone. He was your go-to-guy for sports knowledge, especially New York teams, and cared deeply for those around him. Even through the difficult times, he displayed happiness and love, all the way till the end of life.\n\nSteve is preceded in death by his parents Jean Mable Johansen and Alan George Duryea, Jr. He is survived by his two children Christopher Duryea (Casey) and Colleen Tolley (Neil), two grandchildren, Carson and Cora Duryea, and sister Maureen Fiorenza (Jack), nephew and niece, Justin and Jessica Fiorenza. \n\nWonderful words from his sister, Maureen:\n\n“My brother Steve was known for his surprises and sense of humor. You couldn’t help shaking your head and laughing which are now the memories we cherish. For example, my daughter Jessica, played basketball and the night he watched her play wasn’t her best game so for Christmas that year he sent her a brick. The Post Office wanted to insure the package which of course he declined. One particular Christmas morning he surprised me and was standing on my doorstep. How did he know I needed to see him? One word was Love. That was Steve. His favorite sandwich was peanut butter and mayonnaise so always had to have it in the house when he visited. We used to send each other cards “What is a brother” “What is a Sister” which became a running joke over the years.\n\nHe was so happy becoming a Grandfather and knowing Steve he would have had them on his boat cruising the lake like he did as a child. \nHis family was the most important thing to him and his Love was unconditional. If you met Steve, you were his friend.\n\nSteve was a hardworking, loving, caring person which brought Love and Laughter to all and he will be missed.”\n\nOur family would like to express our sincere gratitude for all the support and care that Sunnybrook Rehabilitation Center has provided over the years. As well as Transition Life Care, who helped guide us through this difficult time. \n\nSteve’s celebration of life will be held on March 23rd, 2024 at the Boot Room (2501 University Dr, Durham, NC 27707), between the hours of 1pm - 4 pm. Born in Beaumont, Texas on May 29, 1964, Calvin was the son of Charles and the late Jean (Smith) Powers. He attended East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte and Texas A&M University, graduating in 1986 with a degree in Computer Science.\n\nCalvin had a long and illustrious career with IBM in North Carolina, beginning with computer programming and internetworking, then moving into cryptography and security, and ending with media production. He was one of a vanishing breed who spends his entire adult career with the same company, retiring from IBM in 2019 after 33 years of service. \n\nBut Calvin almost always had a “side hustle” going on. He began as a radio DJ in 2002 with Duke University’s WXDU, working the Saturday 3–5 am slot. He went on to have regular slots at more reasonable hours at Carrboro’s community radio station, WCOM, and Hillsborough’s new community station, WHUP, broadcasting Taproot Radio “from above the Dual Supply Hardware Store on King Street.” At the same time, Calvin became a podcaster with his Americana Music Show, playing “hand-picked, road-tested, American music.” Over the course of his decades in radio and 500 episodes of the AMS, he did countless interviews with up-and-coming musical acts, and some pretty big names, too. \n\nIt was through Calvin’s long-standing love of science fiction (and the maneuvering of some friends) that he met his wife, Pat French, in 2008. He introduced her to the world of conventions and fandom, and she introduced him to Battlestar Galactica. The rest was history. Other activities they shared included hiking, board games, traveling, and photography. \n\nBesides Pat, Calvin is survived by his father Charles K. Powers and stepmother Judith Fahl of Charlotte, North Carolina; his sister and brother-in-law Cassandra and Erik Johnson of Coppell, Texas; stepdaughters Elizabeth McQuarrie and Katherine Williams and their families; and nephews Spencer and Garrett Johnson. For those wishing to do so, please consider memorial donations in Calvin’s name to the Kidney Foundation, American Diabetes Association, and Meals On Wheels. \n\nLetting Calvin have the last word seems appropriate: “I’m a DIY media mogul (in my own mind), an experienced podcaster, a beginner photographer & videographer, a hack writer, a loiterer in third places, a hiker of trails, a gafiated SF fan, a roots music enthusiast, a strategy game geek, and an all-in husband.” He will be sorely missed."}},"city":"Hillsborough","county":"Orange","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"03/02/2024","age":59,"user_updated":true,"image":{"localFile":{"publicURL":"/static/24b7b13ca24c9701666ad3de00382780/object_Object_53dd46f0d2.jpeg"}}}},{"node":{"id":"46c9d0a6-c200-5442-a84e-35c81018d576","slug":"2024-03-02-Patricia-Murphy","name":"Patricia Murphy","content":{"data":{"content":"Patricia \"Trish\" Murphy passed away peacefully on March 2, 2024, surrounded by her beloved husband and children.\n\nTrish was born on February 15, 1959, a daughter of the late Joseph P. and Jemima McGonigal in Kearny, New Jersey.
