Born February 14, 1946, in South Boston, Virginia to an entrepreneurial workhorse, Claude William Robey, and the former beauty queen of Halifax county, Gladys Virginia Whitt, she grew up loving baseball, cowboy movies, and reading the dictionary. The family moved to Greensboro while she was still in grade school. After marrying her high school sweetheart, James Arnold Spillers, she became the proud mother to Jeffrey Lyle Spillers and Shelby Lyn (Spillers) Reap. Though that marriage didn't last, Claudia did find the love of her life. In 1979 she married a truly good man, James Ross Krueck, and moved to Raleigh. \n\nClaudia was a creator. A genius with a sewing machine, many of her creations were crafted without a pattern. She could draw charcoals and pastels, watercolor landscapes, needlepoint dozens of Christmas ornaments, and crochet enough afghans to keep her family cozy for years. From her childhood when she rescued a litter of kittens destined for a sad end to her last beloved calico, Lola, she was a lover of animals. Her independent spirit led her to repaint her entire house, including the kitchen cabinets, and hang wood blinds in every window all by herself. She was smarter than everyone in any room and wasn't afraid to let you know. In her final years, when Alzheimer's stole nearly everything from her, she still had her beautiful smile and the bluest eyes that would light up the world. \n\nIn addition to her children, she is survived by her son-in-law, Hunter Reap; her wonderful sisters and their husbands, whom she lovingly called her brothers, Phyllis and John Holder of Greensboro, NC, and Connie and Bobby Apple of Shelby, NC; and her nieces Laurann Hooks, Lisa Cregger, and Tracey Pittman, and their families.\n\nDonations in Claudia's memory can be made to Transitions LifeCare at https://www.transitionslifecare.org/donate/.\n\n"}},"city":"Raleigh","county":"Wake","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"03/09/2024","age":78,"user_updated":true,"image":{"localFile":{"publicURL":"/static/d0d0dc5355507e0eaeca53ffa56c1024/Claudia_Krueck_7b17ff0ff0.jpg"}}}},{"node":{"id":"125a5850-4067-5159-88f7-4359abc9a014","slug":"2024-03-09-Tammy-Smith","name":"Tammy Smith","content":{"data":{"content":""}},"city":"Sanford","county":"Lee","state":"North Carolina","deathdate":"03/09/2024","age":54,"user_updated":false,"image":null}},{"node":{"id":"b556e4fe-e923-5c2b-848f-2d1823be917b","slug":"2024-03-08-Raymond-Gatt","name":"Raymond Melven Gatt","content":{"data":{"content":"Raymond Melven Gatt peacefully passed away at his home surrounded by family on March 8th, 2024, at the age of 66 after a year and a half battle with brain cancer.\nRay was born on December 2nd, 1957, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Josephine “Jessie” Antoinette Bugelli and the late Joseph Benedict Gatt. He lived a fulfilling journey in many diverse locations throughout his lifetime. His early life was split between Detroit and Malta, where he felt fortunate to spend time with extended family. Although his time in Malta was brief, it left a lasting impression on him, especially in his love for Maltese cuisine and culture. His mother remarried in Malta and the family emigrated with his stepfather to Ontario, Canada. Ray spent the remainder of his childhood in Oshawa and at 16 years old he met his sweetheart and life partner, Sharon. Five years later they married at St. Gregory Catholic Church. Ray continued his education at The Centennial College of Applied Arts and Technology, focusing on the aviation industry. The pair had 3 children and raised their family in several different locations in Canada and the United States, while following Ray’s career. After many years with Bombardier/Boeing, Ray transitioned to an independent consultant. He spoke fondly of his colleagues and appreciated the friendships that extended beyond the workplace. Outside of his consulting work, he was dedicated to developing and patenting meltable wax-fueled energy devices, aspiring to make a positive impact on the world by offering an alternative energy source.\nRay continually worked for the betterment of a good future for his family. He had a brilliant mind and was witty, creative, and a great cook. He loved a good challenge and learned how to make Maltese Pastizzi and Italian DOC pizza, fired in a stone pizza oven he built by hand. He enjoyed sharing his culinary creations with friends and family at many memorable gatherings. He had a heart of gold and always embraced loved ones with a hug. Ray formed deep connections with a select few, often engaging in long conversations about religion, fiery political debates, or exchanging lengthy text messages filled with captivating content. He was a skilled artist, model ship builder, wood carver and more. He spent quality time with his grandchildren, teaching them how to sketch, fish, and use power tools at a young age.
