She graduated from Cary High School in 1984 and received a BA in Communications from North Carolina State University in 2006. She held several different jobs during her adult life, most notably as an assistant in the Maintenance Department at Ravenscroft School which she really enjoyed. \n\nMelissa was a fun-loving person, who enjoyed laughing and making others laugh. She loved her friends and family deeply and would do anything for them. She helped arrange a summer job for her nephew through Ravenscroft when there were none to be found and then let him live with her for two months, so he’d be close to the office. She would purchase gifts for friends if she was out shopping and saw something she knew they would like. She was a wonderful cook and particularly liked to make extra big pots of soup, chili, and homemade spaghetti sauce to share with her coworkers. She loved cats and couldn’t resist bringing the strays home that she found. One of her favorites was Fender, who got his name because she found him hiding in the fender of a car. She was skilled at crossword puzzles, not having any difficulty completing the challenging Friday ones. She loved playing board games, shooting off fireworks, and spending time at the beach. Melissa loved anything purple, the show Twilight with Jackson Rathbone, the series Firefly, the video game Tomb Raider, and her beloved Hurricanes. But what she loved the most was her daughter, Tori.\n\nMelissa was predeceased by her father, Dalton Ray Harrison Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Victoria Leigh Hogan, mother, Linda Eastep Harrison, sister, Kim Harrison Herr (Scott), niece, Rebecca Lynn Herr and three nephews, Daniel Harrison Herr, Christopher John Herr and Matthew Scott Herr.\n\nA memorial service will be held at The Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian Church, 200 High Meadow Drive, Cary, NC on June 8th at 1:00pm. She was so proud of them and excited about the future ahead for each of them. She delighted in sharing stories about her beloved boys — from the athletic fields to the stage, from city adventures to deployment plans, from a budding design career to significant others. She loved to share their lives with those around her.\n\nSara’s calm, sweet presence gave her an innate ability to see a person’s true self, who they were at their core, often before even they knew who they truly were. She was a friend to many, welcoming newcomers to Raleigh, helping others find their “tribe,” and making lifelong friendships. We will miss Sara’s wit and humor tremendously, as she could deliver a one-liner with a sparkle and a punch! We loved her infectious laughter and funny stories. It is easy to love Sara.\n \nSara had many talents and passions. She loved music, was always up for a live performance! She was gifted with culinary skills that could tackle the most challenging recipes while still delivering the perfect southern casserole. Her flower garden was gorgeous, and she was full of helpful gardening hints, even for those of us with a brown thumb.\n \nOne of our favorite things about Sara was her kindness to all animals. She loved her dogs Gus and Battle with compassion and humor. Sara failed miserably as a foster mom when she couldn’t bear to return her foster dog Battle to Saving Grace Animal Rescue, where she was a faithful and dedicated volunteer.\n\n Sara is survived by 3 sons - David Caldwell Barefoot III, Zollie Augustus Barefoot and Turner Mathews Barefoot, and their Father, David Caldwell Barefoot, Jr, all of Raleigh, NC; her father, Robert Davis Turner of Winston-Salem, and her brother, Robert Davis Turner, Jr. of Charlotte.\nSara was preceded in death by her mother, LeClare Cowart Turner.\n\nA service will be held at Christ Church in Raleigh at 2 pm on Monday, June 3. Joyce sadly lost both parents by the age of three.\n\nExtended Family helped as much as they could, but mostly Joyce was raised in Sunbright, TN, by her Aunt Sarah Bowman who also preceded her in death. Joyce shared “it must have been hard since Sarah’s own daughter Jodi died” and respected her Aunt for taking her in.\n\nAlways tough, independent, and free spirited, Joyce went to Cincinnati, OH and worked briefly as a secretary. She said, “wanted to throw the typewriter out the window!” She enjoyed being a nanny for a Doctor there, but eventually returned to Sunbright to finish High School.\n\nThen she met Bill Hayes, “an excellent father for her children”. She enjoyed living there until April 20, 2023 when she fell and broke her femur. After surgery and 2 months at rehab, she moved into Terra Bella Assisted Living on June 20, 2023. Staff at both fell in love with Joyce & took wonderfully good care of her.\n\nJoyce continued to be feisty and independent til the end, falling often in the last days of her 6 year battle with Dementia, forgetting she couldn’t just get up and do what she wanted.\n\nJoyce enjoyed cooking delicious food and spending time with her family. She also loved to read, enjoyed various types of needle work and crocheting, but nothing made her happier than to have all of her family together.\n\nShe was a devoted mom, loving wife, fun-loving, generous and a bit mischievous.
