He attended New Hanover High School and  played French Horn in their Marching Band and the School Orchestra.  He also was a member of their Radio Club.  James was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wilmington.\n\nAfter high school, James, attended NCSU, graduating in 1962 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.  He was in AFROTC and the Engineering clubs.  He worked as an Radio and TV Engineer for  WRAL,  helping with the installation  of the new Station facilities during that time.  Jim worked with many Radio Stations in the area and is still remembered by those who followed him.\n\nWhen he entered active duty in the US Airforce, he was assigned to a radar site at Montauk Point, NY as a Micro Wave Engineer and later was transferred to Hanscom  AFB in Massachusetts as a First Lt.  He work in Greenland, the DEW Line and other northern points in the communication area.\nITT hired James when he left the AF and he moved to Raleigh.  After several years, he started his on Consulting and Development Communication Company.  He was one of the pioneers and founders of Self Service Gasoline and other types of electronic communication equipment. \nJames was a member and leader of the ISA and IEEE.  He belonged to First Baptist Church and served as a Deacon and Youth Leader.  He was a Past Master of the Millbrook Masonic Lodge # 97 and a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason.\n\nHe was married to Jane Owen Barbot for 62 years and had a son, James Claudius Barbot, Jr.  He is predeceased by brother Julian A. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Morris Elliott  Wilder, two brothers, Gary and Tommy Dean and a sister, Phyllis Merritt. She is survived by a son Johnny Wilder (Paula) and grand daughter Jordyn, four nieces Leslie Osteen, Susan Turner,  Angela Wall, and Barbara Winters. A nephew, Alan Wilder and many cousins. Brenda was a special person and if you knew her you loved her. She loved anything outdoors but fishing was her passion before she fell sick. She was always willing to help and always had a kind word for anyone she came across. She loved to sing bluegrass music with her husband and pick her banjo. She will be missed dearly. Her profession as a lifelong hairdresser yielded many close relationships and touched many lives. Her customers were just like family to her and she had the same clientele throughout her career.
