She studied art at the Lorenzo de’Medici Institute in Florence, Italy. Her fine work in photomicroscopy at the Marsico Lung Laboratory at UNC combined biological research with her artistic talent.  During the COVID pandemic, her stained image of SARS-CoV-2 infected epithelial cells, collected from healthy human bronchi, was featured on the cover of the journal Cell. \n\nShe was an avid pet lover and was devoted to her three dogs:  Roxy, Max, and Clementine.  She enjoyed helping build a neighborhood garden and making friends at the Scrap Exchange in Durham. Her easy athleticism made her a beauty to watch, whether as a soccer goalie, a snowboarder, or a one-wheeler around town.  She was known for her compassionate nature and her adventurous spirit. She grew up on a farm with her Mama, Papa, and 8 siblings. With older brothers serving in WWII and another working as a United Methodist minister, she was guided by three priorities in life; a love for family, God and country. \nEleanor was a member of Union United Methodist Church and taught at Lewisville United Methodist Church Preschool until she retired at 80 years old. She instilled in her students a deep appreciation for nature, and each child knew they were special and well-loved. She was also a beloved babysitter and Sunday School teacher. She spent summers in her blueberry patch and following retirement, she hung up her bucket and moved to Cary to live with her great-grandchildren.\nAfter a stroke in March, Eleanor spent her final months surrounded by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, still finding ways to care for them all. Though her mind and body were failing, her warmth and love were never diminished.\n\nEleanor was predeceased by her loving spouse, William Ulysses Thompson, her children, Cheryl Lynn Thompson and Bill Thompson, Jr., and her life-long friend Patsy Beroth. She is survived by her grandchildren, Anna Watkins (Patrick), Liz Waddell (Cailen), Jeff Thompson (Rebecca), and Matt Thompson; great-grandchildren, Wyatt Watkins, Parker Watkins, Liam Thompson, and Suwan Na; siblings Frank Dalton, Rosie Burton, and Ida McHargue; and many other friends and relatives who affectionately refer to her as Grandma. \n\nAn informal visitation will be held on Monday, July 15th from 3-7pm at the home of Anna and Patrick Watkins. 400 Woodland Ct., Cary NC 27511. Childcare will be provided. \n\nA service will be held at Union United Methodist Church in Lewisville, NC. on Saturday, July 27 at 11am. She was born August 23, 1928, in Ripley, Tennessee to the late O.D. and Nora Lucas. \n\nMary attended Ripley High School and then continued her schooling in Cosmetology School. She enjoyed being a full-time beautician. She later decided to stay home to care for family and manage the home, only taking clients occasionally. Mary was dedicated to her family and was always available when her family needed her. \n\nMary was an involved member of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church and enjoyed membership in the church choir until her health forced her to step down. She enjoyed helping others, and was a volunteer for many committees and programs while her health allowed it. Mary enjoyed flowers, gardening, and shopping! She enjoyed reading and could often be found under her heated blanket with a book. Mary also loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spoiled all of them as much as she could. \n\nMary was preceded in death by her husbands James Lawrence and R.C. Smith; brothers Tom Lucas and Pete Lucas; great-grandchildren, Jacob Zimmermann, Ethan Zimmermann, and Riley Rowe; and many other extended aunts, uncles, and family members. \n\nMary is survived by her sons Jeff Lawrence(Lisa), Jim Lawrence(Lori), and Dale Lawrence(Betty); grandchildren Andrea Zimmermann (Joseph), Carly Rowe (Anthony), Travis Smith (Megan), James Lawrence (Michelle), Ben Lawrence (Christina), Tessa Lawrence; Great-Grandchildren, Blake, Reid, Kennedy, Grant, Hazel, and Emma; Nephew, Robert Lucas; and countless friends and extended family. \n\nThe family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Carolyn Mitchell for the love and care that she has shown to Mary over the years. They would not have been able to keep her as comfortable, happy, and at home without Carolyn and she has been a true blessing. The family would also like to thank the Franklin County Meals on Wheels for providing meals, check-ins, and good conversations each day to Mary. \n\nA celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Mt. Her passing comes as a shock to her family, friends,  and loved ones who are still reeling at the loss. She lived a vibrant life and still had so much time ahead of her.\n\nSuzanne was born October 5, 1956 in Needham, MA; she was the youngest of four born to the late Normand and Jeanne Michaud.\n\nSuzanne is survived by her husband of 41 years: Ray, and their children: Mercedi Sedelmeyer of Raleigh, NC, Cody Sedelmeyer and his wife Maggie of Big Island, VA, Jazzi LoBue and her husband Michael of Raleigh, NC, and Jaime Thiesen and her husband Chris of Rome, NY.\n\nShe had seven grandchildren who she loved dearly: Logan Bower(20) of Raleigh, Eli(13) and Forrest(9) of Big Island, VA, Taylor(5) and Skylar(2) of Raleigh, Marley(15) and Nikko(7) of Rome, NY.\n\nSuzanne dedicated her life to being a fantastic and wonderful mother and wife. She was a force, she had so much life and personality. Always the life of the party and an amazing cook. Suzanne loved the beach, floating in the pool, spending time with her husband, family and her beloved dog Lucy. \n\nWe couldn’t have asked for a better wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and will miss Suzanne every day.\n\nA funeral service will be held Friday, July 26, 2024 2pm at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 11401 Leesville Rd. Raleigh, NC 27613 (St. Mary of Angels Chapel)\n\nWe will celebrate Suzanne’s life following the service. She was born in Brussels, Belgium, the youngest daughter of Oscar Joesph and Denise Marie Celine Keymeule nee Van Der Velde. She was proceeded by her husband, William T. Landis Jr. and her dearest and only sister, Sylvie Van Den Neuker , nee Keymeulen.  She left behind her pride and joy, her four beloved children: William, Hamlin, Sylvia and Mary Denise, 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.\nAlice spent most of her teen years under the German occupation of neutral Belgium. She was educated by the sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, in Brussels. After the end of WW II in Europe, she was employed by the 1ST International War Crimes Tribunal in Nuremberg , Germany as a teletype operator. She met and wed her husband in Europe.  They were married 68 years.  After her husband’s army discharge, they returned to his hometown of Oxford, North Carolina where they raised their family and operated a small florist shop and the Western Union Agency.\nAs the years flew by, her small native land always remained close to her heart. Whenever possible and able to, she would retrace her steps back to Europe for some most enjoyable visits and travels. As age and health issues prevented more trips abroad, she felt quite at peace to stay at home where she often recalled and relived the bittersweet memories of different times and places long gone, but not forgotten. Thankful ever, she was able to spend her final years in a peaceful and friendly small town. \nHeartfelt thanks to loyal friends, neighbors, and care-givers for each kindness extended to me.
